Phangan is a popular island in the Gulf of Thailand. There are a lot of
great beaches. Unfortunately, most of these suffer from problem of strong low tides. But it's not so ugly as in Zanzibar. However, it is still possible to find beaches without this problem. You can get to Phangan only via Samui island. So it's not so crowded like Samui, while prices are a slightly cheaper. And of course, Phangan is mostly famous for its
Full Moon Party monthly events on Haad Rin Beach, - as well as on some other beaches. Definitely, it's not for everybody. But it is worth to try anyway. Shore and seabed: sand, stones.

Hotels [edit]
Phangan Island has a great choice of hotels with rooms' fares ranging from US$30 to US$250 per night. It is a perfect spot for budget travelers, as well as for long stayers. Unfortunately, there are just a few upscale beachfront resorts. However, choice of great boutique hotels is good enough.
How to get there [edit]
You may get from Bangkok to Phangan island by
Lomprayah high-speed catamaran. But the best is to fly to Samui island, and next get by ferry from Maenam beach to Phangan island.
There are two options to fly from Bangkok to Samui:
1. Direct flight to
Samui Airport (USM). This way is most convenient, but also the most expensive.
2. Fly to
Surat Thani airport (URT) by
AirAsia low-coster. Then get by taxi (1200 bahts) to
Donsak Pier. Then get to Samui by any ferry (
Raja ferry is the best, but other services are also good). It is
the best value for money way of getting to Koh Samui, but takes a little longer time, as the road from Suratthani airport to Samui takes a few hours.
When to go [edit]
The best time for a beach holiday in Pha-ngan island is a dry season from January to April, as well as second dry season from June to September.
